Hobbit Hill Farm is a small husband and wife (Dan & Terry Nelson) operated farm, located at the foot of the White Mountains in Wentworth, NH. We grow tomatoes during the long snowy, cold, low light winter months of New Hampshire. We are just starting our fifth year of operation. The greenhouse is 30 by 60 feet and all produce is grown through the use of hydroponics. We provide tomatoes from early November through May 31 to local restaurants, small food markets and farmers markets.
We are not an organic operation but we do not use any insecticides in our tomato operation. We do practice "Integrated Pest Management" (IPM) methods to control unwanted pests. We use "Lady Bugs" to control Aphids and use Nematodes (beneficial parasites) to control fungus gnat larval. Good bugs eating bad bugs.
Our other major problem is Powdery Mildew. It looks like white power on the leaves and affects the growth of the plant. We use only Organic approved fungicides to control this issue.
